Samuel Fielden, killed in Mesopotamia on 30th April 1917. The family were originally from Todmorden but by the time of the 1911 census had moved to Burnley. Samuel’s parents were John William Fielden (an insurance agent) and Frances (maidenly Wilson). By 1911 they had had ten children and three that had died (3 unknown infants are mentioned on this headstone). I have been able to name these infants, there are two buried here at Christ Church (presumably in this plot) : John Arthur Fielden (1893 aged 4 months) and Wilson Fielden (1899 aged 11 days). Their eldest child, James William Fielden is buried at Cross Stone, he died in 1888 aged 3 days.

Sad as it is for them to have lost a son, they were lucky in one way – their other three sons were all too young to serve.
